Boikanyo Mentally & Disabled Children Centre B025

Boikanyo Mentally & Disabled Children Centre is a non-profit organization catering for the physically and intellectually disabled children, irrespective of race, religion, or nationality. Boikanyo Mentally & Disabled Children Centre was established on the 10th of June, 2004 by concerned and dedicated persons in Temba Township, Hammanskraal, about 20km from the Northern side of Pretoria.

 

The centre is registered under the Department of Social Development in Gauteng Province.

 

Although there are still no authentic statistics on the on the extent of the disabled population in Temba Hammanskraal, it is generally conceded that about 10% of the population is affected in one way or the other. Among many types of disability, physically disabled people constitute about'2% of the population in Temba Hammanskraal. According to this bench-figure, it is estimated that there are more than one million physically disabled people in Temba Hammanskraal today. Many of these people do not receive proper service provisions in every sphere of their life. There is only one special school for physically and mentally disabled children, School for Disabled Children (SDC), under The Department of Social Development until today and Boikanyo Mentally & Disabled Children Centre is the first public centre in this specific field.

 

Vision: To provide an environment where physically and intellectually disabled children enjoy equal opportunities and can live with dignity leading to changes in society.

Mission: To value, respect and accept disabled children and support them to live with love and dignity and enjoy equal opportunities with their peers

 

Main aims and objectives

  • Educate the children to be able to cope with their every day's needs. eg, using the toilet facilities, dress themselves, etc;
  • Build a bridge between education and disability by offering the children educational facilities most of them never afford.
  • Teach our community ways to understand and cope with disability.
  • Create employment in the effort to fight crime and poverty in our community.

 

Management Staff and. Governence

As a community project, the Centre is built on a strong community based platform which consists of 25 children i.e. 19 Male and 6 Female,11 full time employees and volunteers from the Lutheran church.
